Apocalypse Rising

Ominous title!

They recognise O'Brien and Sisko, but not Worf?

I love Gowron's eyes, crazy looking strawberry floater.

A very good one! Klingons are always great and it was amusing to see Sisko & co trying to fit in. Sisko in particular seemed to enjoy it way too much.

In hindsight it was too obvious that the changeling would be Gowron. A nice twist!

The Ship

Muniz dying was obvious from the second he opened his mouth. Brand new character, being overly friendly with the chief? Yep, there was no chance he'd live.

The Jem'Hadar really aren't very good at aiming. Not that the Federation is much better. At one point it was so bad that I had to laugh.

Overall though, a good one! I liked the Vorta (sp?) woman and her attempts to negotiate with Sisko. The distrust on both sides was great.

I think the Dominion was right though. It's not ok to take a space shop under "salvage rights" when the owners are right there.

Looking for Par'Mach in All the Wrong Places

Meh. This was poor and wasn't helped by following the previous run of excellent episodes.

Was nice to see Quark and Worf getting lucky and O'Brien really needs to get divorced.

...Nor the Battle to the Strong

When did Jake turn into a giant?

A pretty damn good one! Putting a more realistic depiction of war in a Trek story just shows that no matter how advanced the weaponry, war is always hell.

Jake isn't part of Starfleet and has zero training in medicine or combat. He handled it well, it's way too harsh for him to think of himself as a coward, plenty of hardened soldiers would have ran (as shown!).

The Assignment

People should have instantly spotted there was something wrong with Keiko, she has never been happy before and has never been affectionate towards O'Brien either.

Something I've noticed in Trek is every single time somebody says how long something will take, another character will demand it quicker. "It'll take 36 hours" "no, you have 12!". In this case it might be an evil energy being (again), but it happens a lot with captains, Starfleet command, the chief etc etc. I'm surprised that their ships and bases aren't completely falling apart seeing as every repair job is rushed.

Also, they seem to forgive absolutely anything anybody does wrong. How many times did Data go haywire or have his programming taken over, but it's all forgotten by the next episode. O'Brien turns the whole space station into a weapon, sabotages systems and risks a genocide of the prophets and.....oh it's fine, he was just looking after his wife.

Rom was great in this episode. O'Brien was an absolute banana split for setting him up, even if he got rewarded at the end. :x

Despite my nitpicking and moaning, it was a good episode!

If this is a Highlander crossover, I will be very excited.

Euthanasia isn't a thing in Trek then. Bashir seemed disgusted that the doctor would put people out of their misery.

A thoroughly depressing episode, there might be hope for the future, but still. :dread: But it was pretty good, Bashir's overacting slightly ruined it.

Yeah this is a bit of a weird one in terms of Bashir's reaction to the situation, especially as he quickly discovers that the virus the Dominion have given to the people is incredibly hard to deal with, even with the much more advanced technology he has access to! Like, of course these people are going to focus on palliative care, how is that so hard for your to understand!?

It was bizarre. I could understand it if Bashir could definitely cure it, but his attitude was appalling. The sheer disgust he openly showed, when the people had no choice at all.

He has his moments and he definitely gets better as the show goes on. But yeah, not my favourite character.

I'm still miles behind (Nearing the end of S2) but just wanted to check in.

Just watched the episode "Blood Oath". Great bit of trivia, the three older Klingons that are friends with Dax were all in TOS individually as the same characters but in their youth. One of them was the guy who played Trelane as well.

Trials and Tribble-ations

I have seen the IMDb thumbnail for this episode, so I am interested at how they are going to integrate the 60s show using 90s technology. Hopefully it doesn't look like utter gooseberry fool.

Wow! What a strawberry floating brilliant episode. Technology wise they nailed it, cleverly avoiding too many direct interactions, while fitting it together nicely when they had to meet people.

Plot wise it's probably a bit thin, but it didn't matter, it was just HUGE amounts of fun and was great to see the old favourites again.

And Sisko was loving it, he's never looked so happy

It really really should have been an extended episode or a two parter though. 45 minutes was not long enough. Easily one of the best DS9 episodes so far and is right up there with anything else Trek has come up with.

Let He Who Is Without Sin...

Meh. I couldn't care less about the romances and the bad guys weren't very interesting either.

Meh.

Things Past

I had Quantum Leap vibes at the beginning.

A good episode, the time travel switching to basically being Odo's guilt manifesting was a clever way of exploring the character.

Ultimately though, it all felt a bit pointless, unless Odo's remaining connection to the Great Link.

The Ascent

I like how Odo increasingly turned into a zombie scarecrow as the episode went on.

The Jake/Nog story was a bit gooseberry fool. I normally like the two of them together, but the argument just didn't seem very realistic.

The Odo/Quark story was much better. Although there's no strawberry floating way that Quark would make it up a mountain, even in the best of health. No bloody chance after a crash landing, a march through the snow and days without eating.

Rapture

Visions! Prophets! Quark electrocuting people!

I'm not 100% sure if I liked or disliked this one. It feels like some of the stuff will be important later, but I'm not so happy with the spiritual side of things. Visions and stuff just seem weird in the sciencey Trek universe, even if the original series seemed to encounter a god every other week.

Interesting that Bajor will not join the Federation. Kai Winn is definitely the Farage of Bajor. ;)

I'm assuming that will be good news for them if/when the Dominion attack the Federation, they can be a sort of Switzerland. Bad news for them if Cardassia ever decide to invade them again, although I guess the Cardassians still have their hands full with the Klingons.

The Darkness and the Light

This felt very Silence of the Lambs. And it was written by Bryan Fuller who is obviously a man obsessed with Thomas Harris

Thought this was really good. the gruesome transporter accident! A good little mystery whodunnit with some decent action thrown in!

The Begotten

This reminded me of the TNG episode where Data made a kid for himself. Same sad ending here!

The O'Brien story was bollocks. strawberry float me, nobody acts like such a dick.

I'm glad that Odo can shapeshift again. Him being a Solid was a rubbish idea really, he's far more interesting with his abilities.

For The Uniform

"I've been searching for you for 8 months", have you? I don't think Eddington has been mentioned since he ran off with the Maquis.

A great episode! I like that Eddington looks like an accountant and so it's really easy to underestimate him. The cat and mouse chase between him and Sisko was a lot of fun.

Sisko was fantastic throughout, Brooks is a fantastic actor when he's got decent material to work with. I love that he didn't give a strawberry float at the end, making a planet uninhabitable for 50 years! Damn!

In Purgatory's Shadow

Oooo here we strawberry floating go!

A two parter, so I'll keep this brief, but this was excellent. Garek and Gul Dukat are always great value and Garek annoying Worf was fun.

The revelation that Bashir has been replaced was amazing. But it is a shame they pussied out by saying he was only replaced a month before. It would have been fantastic if they had planned this for years and thrown loads of tiny but almost unnoticeable clues in for a season or two!

By Inferno's Light

I had to pause after the pre-credit scene. Dukat, you sneaky banana split

Cracking stuff! A prison break, traitorous Cardassians, a spy/terrorist and the opening stages of a war, all in one episode

Worf and Sisko were the stars of the show, but I'm hoping we see much more of Dukat, the sneaky strawberry floater.

Just watched this episode, it's lightweight compared to the recent run of episodes which were all pretty high stakes/dramatic, but I think it's a fun ride all the same!

O'Brien getting Keiko was already a stretch, but I can just about believe him managing to convince one beautiful woman to fall for him, but now we're meant to believe that he has the sexual magnetism to woo Kira as well? Not buying it!

Glad Moggy is really starting to get into the show.

Totally agree about Brooks being fantastic when he's given the material to work with. Luckily the writers really start to figure out what works for him so he only gets better and better.

Dukat is my favourite Trek villain, bar none. He's an evil bastard, but he's got his own sick kind of charm that means you always enjoy watching him.

And finally, Andrew Robinson as Garak is amazing. He steals every scene he's part of.

Doctor Bashir, I Presume

So Julian is basically just an annoying version of KHHHHAAAAAANNNNN! ;)

By itself this would probably have been a decent episode. But massively suffers from following the previous two. We want WAR not finding out about Bashir's parents.

Rom finally getting some courage was nice though!

A Simple Investigation

Odo must be able to make some interesting penis shapes when he's shagging.

Meh, this was boring. So boring I can't be bothered writing a full review.

Business as Usual

The O'Brien subplot was shite. Haha babies cry! What a hilarious and interesting way to spend parts of an episode.

Quark's story was very good though. A clever way of gun running without actually breaking any laws, followed up with Quark showing he does have a conscience deep down. Good stuff!

Ties of Blood and Water

This was a bang average episode. I couldn't remember who the Cardassian guy was, so couldn't give a gooseberry fool about his relationship with Kira. Having some flashbacks of her time in the resistance was ok, but seemed overly sentimental and plodding.

Gul Ducat and the Vorta guy were fantastic though!

Ferengi Love Songs

It's getting annoying now that nothing seems to be happening with the Dominion war. It's not that this is a bad episode, it's just strawberry floating stupid to be putting it here, when we are all waiting for things to kick off.

Wallace Shawn is a weird one. His voice is so annoying, but I also love it.

I've got my 9 year old into Star Trek big time. We started on Voyager, weird choice, but my wife was always into Star Trek and we watched that series together when we moved into our house so its like a family thing.

We began at the start of the month and are up to season 5. DS9 is our next series, I've never really watched it properly. Curious to see if we can catch up with this thread.

You'd probably catch up with me Red Dog, I'm miles behind.

Just started Season 3.

The Defiant

One of the downsides to watching the TNG movies before DS9 is that there are a few nice moments you don't get the full impact of. The battle with the Borg cube in First Contact and the appearance of Worf and the Defiant is a really good "YAY!" moment.
