(Obviously Game Pass figures would be higher.)

Spencer is the kind that oozes corporate grease, he's just as bad as Bobby Kotick. Kotick was just more open about it. Actually he's worse than Bobby, Spencer whispers sweet nothings about a new Banjo title is coming, while wearing a Helldivers t shirt and robbing your grandmother blind while you sleep.

Meh.

Come on now, Bobby Kotick oversaw a culture of sexual harassment and helped protect abusers.

Anyone who was cheering the Activision buyout, like it was a winning goal for their side in a footy match, needs to have a rethink. It might be good for you as an individual, if you think you're getting loads of those games "free" on Gamepass, but when a massive company starts hoovering up more and more talent, it very rarely works out as good for the industry as a whole. When you're a small or mid-sized studio, you end up with massive corporate targets and expectations, that you've not got a hope in meeting. What is success for a smaller dev team with one or two titles, is not enough for the corporate conveyor belt of greed, money and stakeholder expectations.

No? Microsoft just won an award for most popular employer in the IT industry and are among the best places to work in the US according to Glass Door.

Yep.

Female employees complaining of harassment at Microsoft:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-47826249.amp

It linked to court records released in 2018 which revealed that 238 internal complaints had been filed at Microsoft from 2010 to 2016 about discrimination and harassment. Only one of the 118 complaints about sex discrimination was deemed worthy of investigation.

Independent assessor deems its sexual harassment policy isn’t good enough: https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2022/11/15/mic ... eport.html

And only very recently was a policy changed that previously placed a gag order on people who settled in harassment cases at Microsoft (though their hand was forced here because it was made law in Washington while they were still doing it):
https://www.businessinsider.com/microso ... 2022-6?amp

So there was certainly a lot more going on that wasn’t made public.

That's really disappointing. Okay so Perfect Dark Zero was a solid if unspectacular launch effort (that if you were buying an Xbox 360 for Project Gotham Racing 3 - you were, right? - and needed something else it was ideal) but in terms of having the potential to do great things with, I think is huge. And yet Microsoft appear to be creatively bankrupt. They've sat on PD for so long that a whole new generation won't have a clue of how amazing PD originally was on the N64. Maybe they're in this whole Duke Nukem mindset of not knowing whether to now make it an FPS or change it to a third person action adventure.

VGC has posted an interesting article about Xbox; basically saying that, because of the scale of Activision Blizzard's huge share of the division's profits, investors and shareholders might well be wondering why time, effort and money is being spent on the games being produced by Xbox's large range of smaller studios - as their proportion of the overall profit is relatively small.

VGC wrote:The problem Microsoft faces—and it was one entirely of its own making—is that it now owns a string of studios working on games that, when compared to Activision-Blizzard’s titles, will barely move the needle in terms of revenue growth.

For evidence of this change, look to a statement Xbox marketing VP Aaron Greenberg made in April last year, before the Activision-Blizzard acquisition. Speaking of Tango Gameworks’ Hi-Fi Rush, he said the game “was a breakout hit for us and our players in all key measurements and expectations.” Yesterday, Microsoft closed the studio.

What was a success last year has clearly been recontextualised by the new scale Microsoft is working to. The cost side of Tango Gameworks became challenged in light of an updated balance book.

The ABK acquisition has turned Xbox into a massive publisher and, as with all companies, people interested in the finances will want investment in the biggest money-making initiatives rather than the smaller things. It's a challenge faced by all large companies but it feels like this is ramping up at Xbox, with some relatively smaller studios being closed.

Its across the board, and it’s because everyone is looking for that lightening in a bottle game like Fortnite/Minecraft but execs don’t understand that you can’t really make one that easily.

Meh.

I agree with much of this; his bullshit 'I'm a gamer guys' brand makes him all the more detestable.
Awful news about yet more studios being shut down, mergers really are not good news, they always seem to go this way. Thank strawberry float the execs are doing great though.

Today, one day after Microsoft announced that it would shut down four of its games studios, Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, held a town hall to discuss the division's future goals. "We need smaller games that give us prestige and awards," Booty told employees, according to internal remarks shared with The Verge.

For some listeners on the call, it was a surprising goal: Microsoft had just shut down the Japanese developer Tango Gameworks, which was coming off the small, prestigious hit title Hi-Fi Rush.

You couldn’t make it up  what the hell is going on over at MS?

ITSMILNER wrote:Outside of MS and looking at layoffs as a whole, a lot of these people are being laid off more than once in some cases. It’s going to reach a point where

1.) People currently in the industry will switch to a more, stable industry
2.) Young people now will reconsider doing uni courses for game dev jobs because of how volatile the industry is

Who would want to work in games with how things are? Where does that leave the future of the industry?

The game's industry has exploited the high demand for jobs in it for decades, that's one of the reasons it isn't unionised and why crunch culture is so common.

That's always led to a proportion of people being put off from joining the industry (me included, because of the unhealthy work-life balance and lack of job security) but that's never been significant enough to drive change. Unfortunately I suspect that will continue.

Completely off topic here, but talking of Midway, I've recently seen TV ads for Bally and they seem to be entirely a repulsive gambling company now. I know slots etc have always been part of their business, but I still associate the name with 80s arcade game excitement.
