Sold a DVD boxset on eBay. It was wrapped up in copious amounts of protective bubble wrap, far more than you'd think would be necessary to protect it during transit, and sent it off via First Class recorded delivery. It was a pretty bulky set, and cost me far above the £2.25 limit you're now allowed to charge for P&P on DVDs, which I paid myself because it's less hassle. That was about a week ago.

The buyer emails me a few days later saying that it's been damaged, that the corner of the wrapping was obviously torn open when it was delivered to his workplace, but the receptionists there signed for it anyway. I reply saying that I'm more than happy to send along the postage receipt I've kept a hold of so he can make a claim with the Royal Mail. He goes off on one, first saying that I should refund him in full (while he keeps the damaged item) and make the claim to the Royal Mail myself, then changing his mind and demanding that I pay the postage for him to return it to me, again for a full refund. I don't really see how it's my responsibility as a seller to do either of these things, and repeatedly tell him than I'll mail the postage receipt for him to make the claim, but he goes ahead and opens a dispute with eBay.

He's now 'taken some advice' apparently and changed his mind again, saying that he wants me to send along pictures of the item before I sent it and the postage receipt so he can make the compensation claim, but if this "doesn't work out" then he wants a full refund. I can do this no problem, but I'm also more than a bit wary at this point, so my question really is this - what are my chances of getting strawberry floated over here? Is he allowed to turn around a month or two from now and immediately claim a full refund, regardless of what happens with the Royal Mail?

Also, yes, I am aware that my first mistake was using strawberry floating eBay. Let's just take that as a given for now.

Sounds like a right banana split and probably isn't the first time he's tried it on. If you can't afford to be out of pocket on it then withdraw money from PayPal, disconnect your card and tell him to get strawberry floated. Has he sent photos of the damaged item?

Not yet, but he keeps going on about sending them over.

I'm just trying to see any possible way in which he could pull a crafty one. I don't actually have a card registered to my Paypal, it comes directly out of my current account. Reckon he could he still do a chargeback on it a month or two from now?

Yeah, the worst thing that can happen is that he puts a claim in with PayPal and they refund him. 90 days I think.

There are a lot of people around like this on e-bay these days. The next thing he'll say is how about you refund me 50% and I keep the set? Don't do it.

I'm really, really tempted to just close down my Paypal account next week to cut him off before he tries a chargeback. The whole thing stinks - the fact that credit card companies can initiate a claim up to 120 days from delivery, without any proof aside from the buyer's word, and Paypal will instantly put a hold on that money until the claim is settled. What a farce.

I would do if it was me, that's why I stay away from e-bay as a seller completely now.

It's not just the specific funds to the value of the item they can hold either, they're widely known to freeze PayPal accounts entirely, crippling businesses who have thousands in their PayPal balance while the company profits off the interest.

Honestly I still struggle to see how they've managed to get by without any real investigation into their practices in the past, but I guess that's because they're so adamant they're not a bank and governments seem to agree, even though they clearly are in one way or another and should get regulated like one.

If he leaves you Negative Feedback then leave him some Feedback using words like twat etc. They have to then remove both yours and his Feedback.

AFAIK he can only claim a full refund from eBay/Paypal once he proves he returned the item to you using a recorded method. You have no obligation to pay for return postage.

Make sure you inspect the package before signing for it as he might try to scam you and send a box of rocks instead

Don't close your account because Paypal will still keep your account details and they are aggressive with claiming money back.

But can't he do a chargeback on my Paypal account without returning the item? - https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?c ... sk-outside

He can only use that method if his Paypal is set to take money from his credit card and not his bank account.

You should have enough evidence (eBay inbox, proof of delivery) to dispute the charge back.

But you never know with credit card companies, which is why you should try to make him return the item instead of keeping it.

One of the only redeeming things to come out of this is that this idiot had me send the package to his place of work, which happened to be a stupid talent/entertainment agency based in London. Two seconds of googling that and his real name brought up a *massive* web footprint, including his own awful promotional website and youtube channel.

Basically what I'm saying is that if he strawberry floats me then consequences will never be the same.

Aye, I sold my racing wheel last year and they guy claimed it wasn't working. Might have believed him if he hadn't been buying other people's items and selling them on. Good job I delivered it to him in person and got paid in cash. Oh how ebay has gone downhill :(

Yeah, nearly a hundred quid.

Finger's on the button. He comes across as such a banana split as well. I'm almost hoping he does do something silly so I can justify it.
