E3 2022 cancels in person event due to COVID concerns, digital event also cancelled

The ESA has canceled its in-person event for E3 2022, according to a statement shared with IGN by the ESA. But, while they point to upcoming announcements, the future of the show this year and beyond remains unclear

"Due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 will not be held in person in 2022," reads a statement sent to IGN by the ESA. "We remain incredibly excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon.”

This effectively means that currently, E3 2022's very existence is uncertain. With no dates set and no physical event planned, that would theoretically leave a possibility for a digital showcase. But in a follow-up communication with IGN, the ESA added that it could not confirm at this time whether or not there would be a digital event this year instead of the physical event, as there was in 2021.

Guessing Microsoft and Nintendo will have their own online events around June anyway but it’s a shame E3 Live is once again cancelled.

Wow that's surprising. Hope it's not the death of E3

As said by others, a real shame (I love watching all the E3 content - its like Xmas for me), but not suprising its been binned again, and probably the sensible thing to do.

I always enjoyed when the posters and such start to be put up around LA and people tried to take sneaky pics of inside the E3 show floor, that was part of the experience of enjoying E3 for me, now I just look forward to Nintendo’s Direct in that timeframe.

Hopefully they're able to sort a virtual showcase of sorts.

E3 is on the way out, sadly.

As much as I enjoy it, I don't really think it serves a great purpose anymore.

Okay so, um, hear me out, E3 a thread:

1. A BIG game was due to be announced at E3, my sources tell me it would have been a big announcement
2. A returning popular IP was to get a trailer
3. A beloved game series is getting remade and a trailer was due to be shown at E3

OK SO, UM, NOW WE WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL AN UNDISCLOSED TIME TO HEAR ABOUT THESE, BUT TRUST ME MY SOURCE SAYS THESE ARE COMING, POSSIBLY IN THE FUTURE.

I heard that Nintendo weren't gonna be at E3 but they will be doing their own digital event. This will contain some previews of big new games, including some franchises that fans love. Rumours abound that an old series could be returning, too, and I think people will be shocked! All of these games will launch over the next four years but I can't say any more for now. I can say that the next Nintendo console is in development but will not be shown at this event; we're gonna need to wait a bit longer.

E3 has been dead for over a decade so this makes no material difference. All the big publishers will still do trailer reveals and updates for their games over the summer whether it sits under the banner of E3 or not.

Like Last year Nintendo and Xbox will have their own events, I wonder if they'll let them be under the 'E3' banner though. The game awards was in the MS theatre so I expect Xbox's to be a live event...
