Some thoughts on the game, after 10+ hours of play...
First up: game looks the bomb. Yes, it has technical issues (on PC), but when it's behaving (most of the time), the world Techland have created is immersive and atmospheric - especially if you find yourself caught out in the open far from a safe house as dusk begins to turn to nightfall... in the game's early stages it is practically mandatory to seek out a safe house and sleep out the night in safety; you just can't take on the hybrid zombies that stalk the night until your character is levelled-up with abilities and powerful weapons. I love the look of it all and the way that it's quite possible to just head out into the world on your own loot runs, just gathering resources, fooling with daywalking zombies, maybe even intercepting Air Drops and managing to nab all the stash before groups of dangerous humans get to it (I've managed this a couple of times, purely by luck - just by being close enough to a random drop to get to it first). You can cash-in Air Drop loot at any quartermaster for a large cash reward.
Combat is a mixed bag. It's actually enjoyable and pretty physical, with stamina an ever-present worry, even after levelling-up some - you'll feel the blows and you'll have to pick your fights carefully. Most daywalking zombies are easy enough to put down, but there are 'heavies' even during the hours of sunlight that you'll need to be a lot more careful around. As always, watch the numbers and use ranged weapons such as firecrackers (to attract) and molotovs (to take out attracted groups of zombies). There is some strategy involved in combat - mainly managing the odds. Don't pick fights with groups of hostile human survivors if you can avoid it - you are almost always outnumbered and out-gunned by hostile survivor groups until you are strong enough and tooled-up enough to present a viable opposition.
Moving around the world is a pleasure. You don't have to run everywhere; it's often more useful to take your time, pay attention to your surroundings and carefully explore. There is much to find - from loot chests with varying levels of lockpicking skills required, to locked vehicles (police vans and ambulances are usually worth the bother - some police vans contain guns, but this is never guaranteed) and all the many properties to clear out. There are special items to be found in the world, too. If you move a little more cautiously you tend not to attract too much zombie attention - during the day, at least. But making loud noises, or just running about in the open like a fool will definitely get the attention of even the most dopey daywalker. Be especially careful when attempting difficult lockpicks; zombies will sneak up on you at any time. Parkour is a joy and I think it's been implemented very well. Just be careful which rooftops you jump onto: if your destination gives way beneath you, you will attract all sorts of unwanted attention.
Night time is a whole other matter. Nights in DL are absolutely deadly. Strange, very powerful and fast hybrid undead roam the world and will quickly find you if you are careless enough to find yourself far from home after dark. Believe me, it's well worth ignoring main missions for a while just to go around the world securing safe houses/zones. You will need them any time you are running for your life through the town at night.
I'm very impressed with the game. It's an almost perfect zombie apocalypse simulator, imo. It feels right, looks great and offers tremendous freedom - I've barely touched the main missions in over 10 hours of play, so far. Technical issues aside (on PC), I think I've finally found a zombie apocalypse I can enjoy.
Good night and good luck.
PS: This is a capture I made yesterday - I get to an Air Drop before anyone else! Yay!
