Sadly, I have to wait for gamesplanet.com to send me a steam key - which probably means until this Friday. :| Then again, I got the game for an abnormally low price by a fluke (£24.99) and it's been added to my list of purchased games on the site, so swings and roundabouts, etc.

Yay. Just got my steam key! Now pre-loading! :o UK Unlocks tomorrow, 8am, according to Steam discussion thread. Still, better than having to wait until Friday!

I take it you missed it when it was going for $20 yesterday, then?

I've played just over an hour and I like it a lot. Looking forward to getting some co-op games if anyone's on PS4.

So, for some undisclosed reason Sony have taken down Dying Light from PSN, which means that not only are those who paid for a pre-order now without the game they paid for, but that nobody else can buy the digital download version - apparently this is the case across most territories apart from the US. Sony have not said a word about why this has happened.

Sony. :fp: Another free own-goal for the opposition. Well done! Absolutely disgraceful.

Maybe the reason the Euro version never came out physically was some kind of game breaking bug that it had, and the EU digital copy was supposed to be the fixed version, but instead they released the bugged version?

Edit- after reading through that thread, it seems that what was done originally- the Devs pulled the version that was up, and put up a new version... Problem is the version that's been put up instead doesn't actually load... Not sure whether it's Sonys fault or Techlands, but I will say Techland has always seemed a bit of a "rogue trader" type of developer to me.

How do you score an own goal for yourself?

Poor EU owners will have to save £20 and buy it from the US store, I suppose.

Is this not just in line with the XBox release date of tomorrow in the UK? Hardly a major boost to the Bone, is it?

Quite annoying that it's supposed to have a worldwide digital release on the 27th/28th (depending where you read) and the Steam/PSN versions came out but MS/Techland/Warner Bros/whoever have kept the Xbox version as the 30th.. though guess might've had same issue as the Sony version had it gone live earlier I guess.. seems odd though unless someone forgot to send MS the memo saying it had been brought forward slightly.. :fp:

I'm waiting for a bit more info on the performance before I decide which version to get. Apparently it's not running brilliantly on AMD cards.

I think that some of the confusion has to do with what the lowest settings on PC amount to. The lowest LOD you can set it to is the same as PS4.

Yep, according to Steam forum thread for the game AMD users are having a hard time with the game on PC. Nvidia users still have issues, but perhaps not so severe. Nvidia have at least issued a new driver which includes optimisations for Dying Light - definitely improved performance for me on my GTX 760. The fact is, the PC port needs a thorough optimisation across all GPUs. Performance is never really satisfactory for anyone, it seems - even very high-end rigs are reportedly struggling with fps and draw distance issues. Having said all that, I've logged over 10hrs on the PC version so far and I must say it's a great game.

Is this any good?

Fabian Delph is a banana split.

Looks like a bit of a one trick pony, to me. If the thing is as long as they say (50 hours) then I'm hoping for a bit more variety.

50 hours???

It's not a physical release yet either is it? So I can't flog it if it's shite.

Another month to wait for the disc version.
The parkour climbing looks mega but they surely need more meat on the bones than just 'scavenge for stuff, come back'. State of Decay had the same problem, where's the story, or at least some decent characters yo.

The combat in this looks non existent. Can you even block and parry?

Some thoughts on the game, after 10+ hours of play...

First up: game looks the bomb. Yes, it has technical issues (on PC), but when it's behaving (most of the time), the world Techland have created is immersive and atmospheric - especially if you find yourself caught out in the open far from a safe house as dusk begins to turn to nightfall... in the game's early stages it is practically mandatory to seek out a safe house and sleep out the night in safety; you just can't take on the hybrid zombies that stalk the night until your character is levelled-up with abilities and powerful weapons. I love the look of it all and the way that it's quite possible to just head out into the world on your own loot runs, just gathering resources, fooling with daywalking zombies, maybe even intercepting Air Drops and managing to nab all the stash before groups of dangerous humans get to it (I've managed this a couple of times, purely by luck - just by being close enough to a random drop to get to it first). You can cash-in Air Drop loot at any quartermaster for a large cash reward.

Combat is a mixed bag. It's actually enjoyable and pretty physical, with stamina an ever-present worry, even after levelling-up some - you'll feel the blows and you'll have to pick your fights carefully. Most daywalking zombies are easy enough to put down, but there are 'heavies' even during the hours of sunlight that you'll need to be a lot more careful around. As always, watch the numbers and use ranged weapons such as firecrackers (to attract) and molotovs (to take out attracted groups of zombies). There is some strategy involved in combat - mainly managing the odds. Don't pick fights with groups of hostile human survivors if you can avoid it - you are almost always outnumbered and out-gunned by hostile survivor groups until you are strong enough and tooled-up enough to present a viable opposition.

Moving around the world is a pleasure. You don't have to run everywhere; it's often more useful to take your time, pay attention to your surroundings and carefully explore. There is much to find - from loot chests with varying levels of lockpicking skills required, to locked vehicles (police vans and ambulances are usually worth the bother - some police vans contain guns, but this is never guaranteed) and all the many properties to clear out. There are special items to be found in the world, too. If you move a little more cautiously you tend not to attract too much zombie attention - during the day, at least. But making loud noises, or just running about in the open like a fool will definitely get the attention of even the most dopey daywalker. Be especially careful when attempting difficult lockpicks; zombies will sneak up on you at any time. Parkour is a joy and I think it's been implemented very well. Just be careful which rooftops you jump onto: if your destination gives way beneath you, you will attract all sorts of unwanted attention.

Night time is a whole other matter. Nights in DL are absolutely deadly. Strange, very powerful and fast hybrid undead roam the world and will quickly find you if you are careless enough to find yourself far from home after dark. Believe me, it's well worth ignoring main missions for a while just to go around the world securing safe houses/zones. You will need them any time you are running for your life through the town at night.

I'm very impressed with the game. It's an almost perfect zombie apocalypse simulator, imo. It feels right, looks great and offers tremendous freedom - I've barely touched the main missions in over 10 hours of play, so far. Technical issues aside (on PC), I think I've finally found a zombie apocalypse I can enjoy.

Good night and good luck. ;)

PS: This is a capture I made yesterday - I get to an Air Drop before anyone else! Yay!
