Doctor Who companion Millie Gibson is being dropped from the BBC sci-fi show and will be replaced for Ncuti Gatwa’s second series by actress Varada Seethu.

The decision by showrunner Russell T Davies to write out the former Coronation Street star, who plays orphan Ruby Sunday, was made last year after filming on her first run ended. The shock twist will come as a surprise to fans who only watched her on-screen debut in the festive episode last month.

Now Millie, 19, will not appear in the 2024 Christmas special later this year and will make only a handful of appearances across Ncuti’s second series as the Doctor during 2025. The eight episodes she has filmed already will air from May, the BBC has announced. After that, it will not be Millie flanking him on his time-travels in the Tardis but new companion Varada, who has already started filming at the studios in Cardiff.

Following Russell’s decision to write her character out, teen actress Millie filmed for three months before Christmas. She has now almost finished on the show and will only be back “to tie up loose ends” in the coming weeks, according to insiders. “Millie Gibson has all but left now and there’s a brand new companion, which is really exciting,” one said. “Russell is keeping things moving and isn’t letting the grass grow, that’s for sure.”

In next year’s series her character is expected to appear in just three of the eight episodes, with one of them a standalone story wrapping up Ruby Sunday’s journey with the Doctor.

Weird, given all the promotion around Gibson’s casting, and the whole Christmas episode dedicated to establishing her back story.

It is fun to see new situations and new people... but I do kinda wonder if Doctor Who is in danger of going a bit too heavy on "new"; rather too much change. It could be hard to identify any continuity.

But, hey, I'll still be looking out for the new episodes.

Decided to catch up on David Tenant's new episodes & instead watched all of Jodie Whittaker's episodes. Felt she was a decent Doctor. I found her episodes a bit hit and miss but my key criticism would be too many assistants, which diluted the relationship somewhat for me.

For the first time, I found myself really interested in the episodes with a historical setting. It's funny how a break from a program can change your perspective. I don't think Doctor Who has any enemies to the same standard of the Cybermen & Daleks & the historical episodes with other foes were more interesting than the futuristic.

David Tenant's episodes were disappointing. I felt that the storylines and settings were a bit naff, which is a shame as I'm sure David Tenant is the favourite modern Doctor for many.

Ncuti Gatwa shows promise, as does his new assistant. My biggest concern is that his episode (and at least one of Tenant's) seemed to sit more within the realms of fantasy than science fiction. It's a thin line to keep a time travelling alien feeling believable, but the last episode featured goblins and briefly veered into a musical. That probably crossed the line for me.

My wife and I have just started rewatching from the 2005 reboot.

It's the first time I've seen this since they first aired so I don't remember too much, just some of the broad strokes so it's nice to revisit.
I was surprised by how much it feels like the older show at points, especially in the way scenes are written and shot.
It is one of the most 2005 feeling shows of all time and it has that slightly cheap, shonky feel that BBC Special effects at the time were like.
Ecclestone is a lot more aggresive than I remember. He is really good though. It's a shame we only got the one season with him.

But I'm enjoying them and the intention is to get through the whole show, including Jodie Whitakers run which we skipped before.
Time to give her another shot I think.

I believe that they are planning to lean more into the fantasy in the future

I have mixed feelings on Ecclestone's run. On the one hand he successfully relaunched the series and I remember enjoying it at the time. On the other, after rewatches, I'm not a huge fan. I don't know how much of that is down to him only having one series and us not seeing him grow into the role but of the new-Who Doctors, he is my least favourite.

The premiere will start on May 10 at 7 p.m. ET in the U.S. and internationally (excluding the U.K.) with Christmas special “The Church on Ruby Road” airing before two brand-new episodes. In the U.K., the season will premiere at midnight GMT on May 11 on BBC iPlayer.

7pm on the 10th May would be midnight here on 11th May though?
