Well the context is different.
Firstly Rory was immortal and plastic so waiting kind of means less to him. Amy is actually wasting her life away. Secondly Rory knows he is waiting for something and gets to wait on Earth. Amy never knows if they will return to her and is stuck isolated on a planet with killer robots. She could very well die in that place alone. Also ultimately it also shows the difference between the two.Cheeky Devlin wrote:A lot of the basic structure is in place but it's not quite there yet.
Be interested to know when you feel it is there! See you in about 5 years
Seriously always love hearing people giving classic Who a go.
Regarding the pacing, even within classic Who some of the longer 60s stories can feel a bit slow. But you get use to it. I do think there are some advantages to it like spending more time with characters. I'm not sure the group of Thals would feel as much like individuals in new Who.
That difference in context is the only reason I wasn't advocating for them just strawberry floating leaving her there.
Still, it does seem a little bit off to complain about having to wait that long to a guy who literally had to wait millenia.
It's the only episode (so far) where I've not really liked the choices they made with Amy.
It's going to be interesting as my experience with Classic Who is really limited to what I saw as a young kid. One Pertwee story that I must have seen on repeat (Pretty sure it was Spearhead from Space) and I definitely remember seeing some of Sylvester McCoys run as it aired. Which is why I've always had a real soft spot for him as the Doctor. Plus the TV movie. Strangely enough the TV movie is the only one that I remember any detail of so it'll all be new to me, assuming I can stick with it.
The pace is going to be the tough part. I'm hoping it'll let the characters breath a bit, but "The Daleks" could very easily be trimmed down to 3/4 parts and wouldn't lose much. It's just a different style of storytelling that we just don't see anymore and it's hard to go back to that.
So far though the main thing is that the Doctor doesn't feel like the Doctor yet. He's literally just a smart old guy. But that's to be expected when you go back 60 years to the start of something. I'm assuming that will change as time goes on though.
Definitely enjoying it for now.
EDIT: I'm also trying to up the pace of getting through Nu-Who. Want to get it finished before starting the new stuff later this month. I wasn't going to but RTD saying that stuff from Chibnalls run will be important means I should probably watch that first. Which will be interesting as I skipped his entire tenure as showrunner and I've heard "mixed" things about some of the narrative choices he made.
