The day shouldn't have formal ties to the military in any form because it's their actions that caused all the strawberry floating death in the first place, parades in uniform just serve to demonstrate that the lessons of war haven't been learnt because there's still a strawberry floating military tradition. It's not about "heroes" despite what right wing facebook posts may claim it's about the needless loss of life, using terminology like heroism implies that there is some inherent value in war, some redeeming quality or personal salvation, and that's not an acceptable conclusion.

This is exactly what I was trying to say but much better put and explained

Not everybody supports wars or standing armies. Becoming a soldier is largely a choice and one made whilst aware of the consequences.

And on the very next line of the quote that you edited, Falsey, I said "I can understand people not agreeing with the idea of war, but that is not the point of the poppy - it's to show respect and empathy for people who have been affected by participating in war.". In the case of the first and second World Wars, many fighters were conscripted by the government i.e. the people called up had no choice. By supporting - or just remembering - these people you are not indicating that you love the idea of war; you are just tipping your hat to folk who had to get involved in some horrendous situations.

Anyway, I now recall why I don't get involved in these kinds of threads; I shouldn't have bit. I'm outta here!

I wear a pin on my lanyard at work, and wear a paper one on my bag, but that obviously means I don't wear one all the time. Nobody has ever had a go at me for not wearing one, mainly because anyone with half a brain who wears a poppy themselves knows that anyone not wearing one has quite possibly lost theirs and already bought about seven that year...

I always buy one, and usually more than one since I inevitably end up losing at least one of them when the pin comes out and it falls off without me noticing. Don't particularly care if other people don't though.

I didnt omit it to be obtuse, I omitted it because it doesnt matter. War is war and soldiers are soldiers and a lot of people might not feel that being good at killing stuff in far away countries is enough reason to be respected.

When I was a kid I used to buy/wear one every year. I was a member of my local Scout troop and we were heavily involved in our local Remembrance Day parade and service, because I was pretty strong I was usually our flag bearer.

Nowadays however I rarely buy them, if they come round the office selling them and everybody else gets one then maybe I'll get one to avoid looking like a dick.

Just be eternally grateful we don't have conscription any more. Others weren't so lucky. What Jawa said absolutely does matter, because that is exactly what Remembrance Sunday is for. It is to remember those who did not have a choice but to be sent out into hellish conditions to kill or be killed, in such "far away countries" as France and Germany. Do not allow the modern state of the military and warfare to colour your view of the past. They are completely, 100% different.

As has been said before though, the poppy has been hijacked by the "are boys" brigade. It's not like the poppy represents just WWI and II, if you wear a poppy in the eyes of society you're remembering ALL dead service personnel, and in my case that's a hell of a lot of people who fought in wars I didn't believe we're justified.

There's a big difference to showing respect to volunteers who died in droves to fight an army of almost supervillainish proportions and paid contractors who fight whoever they're told for a salary.

There's an old fella in my local shopping centre who sells them every year, always give him a fiver but don't always get around to putting the poppy on.

Some more people were banging on about this on the radio this morning.

"I WEAR MY POPPY WITH PRIDE!" is the same old line trotted out again and again. How about you forget anything to do with pride, wear it to 'remember' if you want to, and don't criticise others for doing something differently to you (i.e. not wearing one, or 'remembering' in their own way without feeling the need to wear a poppy).

I don't believe that's real.

One, no-one would choose that font - not even Facebookers.

Two, that sentence smacks of someone trying to be incorrect with their grammar, rather than someone genuinely not knowing it. And all the words are spelt correctly, too.

Three, it's tasteless as strawberry float. A dead and dismembered soldier strewn with poppies? :fp:
