PostCVG to Close | Edge Online Goes Aswell
by Floex » Thu May 15, 2014 8:57 pm

Every member of Future UK has been put on a 45-day consultation period and games website Computerandvideogames.com faces closure, sources close to Future's management have told MCV.

Mass changes will happen across the board, with big alterations also being made to Total Film as well as other future games website.

MCV understands Kotaku UK, PC Gamer and Gamesradar will be safe under current plans, although that may change.

In an email to staff Future boss Zillah Byng-Maddick said that Future's business model was not 'working hard enough' and admitted 'we need to change and fast.'

The news follows a string of poor financial results, including a profit warning in March which caused the firm's share price to plummet.

Future boasts almost 900 staff and its games publications includes CVG, Edge, Gamesmaster, Gamesradar, Official Xbox, Official PlayStation and Official Nintendo. It also runs the Golden Joystick Awards and operates the UK arm of Kotaku.

How the strawberry float does Gamesradar escape the chopping block? :fp:

Kotaku UK is live now? I had no idea. Don't get why they're bothering with Kotaku UK really.

Very unexpected. C&VG has only just had a facelift & the quality of its output has improved dramatically. A few years ago it was an embarrassment. The most recognisable Future brand on YouTube & over E3. GTA 5 O'Clock was also great.

On the magazine front the only titles that wouldn't surprise me if they were to close is GamesMaster & at a push Official Nintendo Magazine. Everything else would be an absolute bombshell.

Gamesradar is quite the barren website when compared to everybody else but apparently is extremely popular so what can you say. People must really like the features that they put out.

Upsetting news if true, I've been reading CVG in one form or another since I started gaming.

I picked up a couple of subscriptions to T3 magazine last year - one was practically free as it's was discounted to practically nothing in WHsmiths (6 months), and another for myself at 12 months for something like 78% off. I then picked up FHM (non Future) for 85%ish off this year. With those discounts you do have to wonder how they're making any money.

Eurogamer is Eurogamer and seems to be doing very well. The founder was on One Life Left a few months ago and it seems to be growing. Their expo gets bigger year on year, too.

I wonder why EMPIRE has consistently thrashed the pants off Total Film. Stuff outperforms T3 too, despite the latter being much better.

I can see why Empire is the elite mag. It classes itself as the 'Edge' of the mainstream film mag world.

So disappointing. I subscribe to the Official Nintendo and Official PlayStation mags; I look forward to getting each issue and reading through them.

I guess it's not a surprise as mags have been finding the going tougher month-on-month for years. It doesn't help that the shelf prices are ridiculously high; Official PlayStation and Official Xbox are six quid each and that's perceived to be too much by most people. Subscriptions can significantly reduce this pricing point but not enough people appear to be interested.

Big challenges for publishers include (a) transitioning customers (and sales) from print to digital and (b) making companion websites that benefit both the paper and digital mag formats. No-one has really delivered solutions for either of these hurdles; digital sales are low and the websites end up being regarded as a replacement for the mag purchase or as totally unrelated.

I just hope the gaming mags survive.

Rather shocking news

I always thought of CVG as a really big site with a large presence online, but if people aren't going to it then it gives Future a reason to cut it unfortunately.

Also Empire is a lot better quality than Total Film though I still get both :shifty:

What where Future thinking of, starting up two new websites just weeks ago? Employing those people, only to put their jobs in jeopardy. The same thing happened to me 12 years ago. I was head hunted to run a business newspaper website, only for the Swedish publisher to pull the plug months later.

Bet he'll probably regret that in the morning.
