Omicron BA.1-containing mRNA-1273 boosters compared with the original COVID-19 vaccine in the UK: a randomised, observer-blind, active-controlled trial

Interpretation

Omicron-containing booster vaccines generated superior immunogenicity against omicron BA.1 and comparable immunogenicity against the original strain with no new safety concerns.

Seems to work well. Shame there's no option for young adults that are ineligible for a free yearly booster to pay £15 for a jab similar to how the winter flu vaccine works. There undoubtedly would be enough demand for such a service.

Yeah I can’t understand why there is no option to pay for a yearly vaccine like with the flu jab. Seems odd not to.

Far right conspiracy theorist who spread fears about the vaccine wonders why she can't taste anything.

Private Covid vaccines may soon be on sale in UK for the first time

The number of people who will qualify for a Covid booster from the health service this autumn has been cut by about 12 million, compared to last year, after the minimum age was raised to 65 from 50

Covid jab manufacturers are preparing to make booster shots available for the public to buy after health officials gave the green light to private sales for the first time.

High-street jabs are unlikely to be available in time for an autumn booster campaign but could become available next year.

Privately some officials are keen to see a market develop in order to maximise vaccine coverage as the NHS restricts availability. Leading scientists have called for Covid boosters to be available to buy privately. However, they also warned that the vaccines are likely to be significantly more expensive than the flu jab, which typically costs £15-20, and that this would limit the numbers able to pay out of their own pocket.

I thought the AZ cost just shy of £4 a shot? That’s a heck of a markup even for Pharmaceuticals if it’s going to be more than £30 a dose.

It would be unusual for drug companies to rip people off.

AZ is discontinued in the UK.

Moderna now charge $130, USA prices are before VAT.

Boots and Superdrug etc won't have the huge buying power the NHS does so I could easily see a private Covid jab costing £200 which is certainly high enough that many people just won't bother.

Absurd.

Hey let's get a vaccine available for everyone so we can at least try to keep it under some sort of control!

Yeah but what if we didn't?! let's make it really expensive so nobody wants it and the virus runs unchecked and comes back properly in 5 years!

Brilliant!!!

I'll get a booster at the pharmacy as soon as they become available. But I'm lucky to be able to. A price of £100+ will be unaffordable for many people.

Bah, just tested positive after feeling a bit cold and flu like yesterday. Heard there are rumblings about bringing the covid wards back this winter in the main hospital. We still have a rented vaccine centre in town so we have the flu vaccination programme ready to run with limited covid vaccinations for those eligible. I have a bad feeling about this…..

I was looking back at the early days of the pandemic, and this was a page 1 highlight.

27 January 2020.

Doubt it'll get too far outside China.

Eh, I had people in work in the February telling me it wasn't a big deal. It was a pretty normal opinion at that time.
