Been a nice quiet Christmas here so far, lunch is well underway, will be opening the small amount of presents under the tree shortly (I think). You can tell the TV on Christmas Day is purely there for background noise, the historic main channels offerings is dire to put it politely!

Reckon my potential stress filled days will be when the extended family come around

Well my Christmas has been gooseberry fool for the most part. Got a phone call at 5.20 from my ex to say my boy was sick everywhere and she had no bedding so I had to go pick him up to sleep at mine.

He woke up at 10 feeling better and she came over. We did presents and then I’ve now spent all day being sick and upset stomach. Had two mouths of Christmas dinner and that’s it.

So yeah. I’ve felt pretty rubbish all day and it’s made the day kind of null and void.

Already had the annual argument with my mum about them changing the words to Fairytale of New York.

Apparently her personal enjoyment of a song with the slur in is far more important than the feelings of the people that slur is targeted against. "it isn't a slur, it just means a bundle of sticks, they're taking away my freedom to say a word!" For an otherwise intelligent woman, she sure can be willingly ignorant as pig gooseberry fool when she wants to be!

The word doesn't bother me in context of the song because its a story song, there are two characters and one says it, a bit like a character in a film saying something..... I always took the song as basically two drunken nob heads arguing and nob heads are going to say nob head things to each other if that makes sense... I have heard plenty of people loose there minds over the song either having the words or not having the words though and its not something id want to argue about... I am not gay though so I guess if I was my attitude may be different but possibly not as my oldest brother is and he likes the song, he pretty much see's it the same way I do as its said by nob heads arguing in character in song. (I do realise my brothers acceptance of it doesn't mean he speaks for everyone who is any more than I speak for every autistic in the world).

I do know there's a proper professionally recorded version that changes that one word and I wish places would play that instead of some of the weird edits I have heard, there seems to be one that omits about 8 lines of the song and goes instrumental for like 30 seconds..

On a happier note Merry Christmas everyone may your times be merry and your arguments minimal.

I agree with your interpretation of the song. The song writers are not using it as a slur against a minority, in the way that many 20+ year old songs do. The "******" and "slut" words are the characters talking and they are clearly not characters that are supposed to be lovely people.

But it's also perfectly fair for radio/TV to play a censored or even edited version, especially in the day time.

I'm autistic and have been around people every waking moment of every day for a week or so and it feels bad wanting to get away from my own wife, son and family but it's starting to visibly wear on me, like I don't have time to think or do anything other than be participating etc, my office becomes a dumping ground as I'm not going to have the chance to even set foot in there for a good couple of weeks let alone go do anything I want to do other than simply exist, so I'm very much looking forward to the time I have booked off from the 2nd to the 5th when he's back in nursery, my wife is back and work and I can be left the strawberry float alone.
