These days I am 100% Xperia as even Google have moved away from AOSP. I quite like the understated design of Sony's phones and the lack of pretense.

What the strawberry float is this?

The cost of the phone will affect the quality of the components and the spec sure, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't last a year. That's such an elitist comment.

If you make something from cheap parts it won't last as long, it's not elitist it's a fact, make a car from cheap but it will breakdown, make a pc from cheap part it won't last.

Sure some will last great and boo ya for that, but wouldnt be surprised when it breaks because it was a cheap phone, it isn't designed to last.

I get different people have budgets so can't go getting a 600+ phone but to buy a cheap phone expecting more than the warranties life span is daft, it's a cheap phone it is build to a low cost and quality and so not built to last, if it was it would be considerably more expensive.

I totally disagree with you. A phone should last at least 2-3 years whether it's £100 or £1000. Especially from a reputable company like Motorola.

Motorola don't make the Moto phones, Lenovo do.

It's the same laptops, pc, cars, etc. the cheap versions or cheap because they won't last, what people would like and relaity is different, yes companies should make things that last, but they don't, if you buy cheap it is made cheap by cutting corners and using cheap gooseberry fool parts. Tech is expense and you quite literally get what you pay for, if you are paying 180 quid an expecting 2 or 3 years out it without issues frankly you are deluded.

Now let's end this here as there is no point going in circles.

Ok mate, seems like a fair way to end this.

You are. Of you think 2 phones one costing 1000 and one cost 100 should have the same life span you are.

The only way that could happen is if they both had the same build quality and component quality and the 1000 one was only 1000 because "big corporations profiteering".

A Rolls Royce is not built to the same quality as a Ford Fiesta and as such costs more and lasts longer.

It can't get cheap without the parts going into it being less good, if they are less good they won't last as long.

If you can't understand that you are A pulling mental contortions to call it capitalms and profiteering or B deluded.

It is not elitist to say a better build product will last longer than a worse built one, it is not elitist to say that something that cost 180 quid won't last the same as something that cost 800.

This is a gooseberry fool elitist comment and if you can't see that then I don't know what to tell you.

At no point have I said that phones of different budgets should last the same amount of time. I said you should get at least 2-3 years from any phone, especially one from Motorola (which I'm well aware are made by Lenovo, though I appreciate that little comment). It's £200 he's dropped, not spare change. That's a bare minimum you should expect.

With Android my experiences have taught me the opposite is often true. At some point Google bork all their phones with a software update that introduces hideous battery drain via a bug that never gets patched. This happened to my Nexus4, 5, Pixel 1, 2 and 3 and the venerable T-Mobile G1.

Conversely I have had much cheaper Motorola phones that have lasted years. I think I still have an old G7 knocking around somewhere that the kids use as a remote for various toys.

My current handset is a midrange Xperia 10iii which got panned by critics for having a slow processor and a crap camera and yet once I installed a port of GCam it takes better pictures than my previous OnePlus 7t Pro which has hideous noise problems and serious battery drain.

The X10iii easily lasts 2 full days and yet is only as dinky 6', barely bigger than a 4a.

Yeah Errkal is talking complete bullshit here. With a lot of over confidence for some reason.

I know plenty of people with cheaper phones since I tend to stay in poorer countries than the UK, and most of them have had the same devices for a few years.

Even when you Google average lifespan of a Motorola smartphone the consensus is 2-3 years of high level functioning.

You should easily get 2-3 years out of a cheaper phone. Cheaper phones generally have less features ie no wireless charging or a lower res screen. This doesn't stop a device from working well for a decent time span. As for materials internally components will be pretty similar it will be down to having the slower CPU/GPU chip and generally less RAM, maybe no 5G or WiFi features. I do get that you wont get a nicer looking phone externally this is where cheaper materials get used.

Also if you maintained a Ford fiesta to Rolls Royce levels it would last as long.

Cheaper Android phones used to really crap out after a few years because they often only had 8-16GB of storage and would simply stop being able to receive system or app updates. 64GB seems to be the norm now and I don't think they tend to run into the same problems.

I suspect most Moto phones released two to three years ago are still going strong if they haven't been replaced just because their owner wanted an upgrade. The idea that they'll generally stop working a little after a year is pretty ludicrous really.

£180 isn't cheap for a smartphone but it's not a lot either. Tbh I think justification on the part of spending thousands of disposable income is a factor.

The idea your phone should break after 1 year unless you spend stupid money is daft.

I have a Sony Ericsson k800i a phone from 2007 that still works albeit with an old new stock battery.

My smartphone after abstaining for years because planned obsolescence and addiction is a Huawei P-Smart FIG LX1. https://global.techradar.com/en-za/revi ... smart-2021

Old new stock from random ebay outlet with a 25% off code, was around £80 sim free.

It's quad core cpu with 4gb of ram which is plenty for running a couple of apps and normal system processes.

Aluminium frame and body with a high pixel density 1090p ultra wide display. Actually fits in my hand.

It works fine and has no problems, over a year old now. The specs are fine for day to day use and there's no os slowdown typing with a heavy keyboard like SwiftKey or basic things like that.

Launched 2017. I used my HTC One for about 5 years before I bailed smartphones dialy daily/obsessive use. Eventually the power button, the part with the most actuations, failed in a permanent "off" state but I have a replacement part. The battery is also knackered.

This time it's a comparable (better) phone but I bought it backwards, after everyone had their fill on massively inflated contracts to buy the exact same gooseberry fool.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/m.gsmarena ... p-8961.php

The batttery lasts about 1.5-2 days of light use.

So try buying sim free, old stock as new or new and sealed. This idea you've got to buy a £40 a moth contract phone to send texts and use WhatsApp is bollocks, you're effectively renting basic functionality at a ridiculous premium for a device you'll replace within a year or two anyway, and you probably can't even hold this thing effortlessly.
