Yeah, I can't imagine that the figures have *that* much memory / storage space in them; so I wonder just how many games they could be compatible with. Unless the functionality is kept pretty simple for most 'compatible' games i.e. perhaps just used to change your character. Which would still be pretty neat.

Totes. I'm currently determined to just buy a 'few' but I can see that stance failing.

That would be amazing... but the amount of variations makes me think this just wouldn't happen - the cost would be crazy!

Cost wasn't a factor. In a GRcade exclusive, I present the jawafour amiibo!

If I'm going to buy one it'll be Marth.

Evidently it's not Smash specific anymore.

Presumably you wouldn't need to buy new figures for every game that supports them though, which gives the idea some interesting legs you dont see in Skylanders.

I got the opposite impression as even the boxes for the figures have the smash logo on them.

In fact, that's my only concern with amiibo: it doesn't seem quite as cross game as they implied initially with new variants for Mario et al coming out for their big games rather than having one Mario figure that works across all games.

Well, the thing about variants is that it can still be the same electronics in every version of Mario.

Actually, what might be an interesting idea is to give them the same capabilies as a Wiimote to store "Miis". You could use the figure as a "quick login" and multiplayer setup. Each player sticks their Amiboo on the reader in order of play. It downloads the Mii, and auto-signs each player into Nintendo Network as it does so.

Amiibo was built for Pokemon. A match made in heaven.

How cool would it be going to buy the game in store and have to physically pick your starter from the counter?

My thoughts exactly. It'd be an amazing experience for any kid starting a new Pokemon adventure and a perfect introduction to the Amiibo things if you could get one (and only one of the starters) free with the game.

I loved the little Pokemon figures for Rumble, they were perfect, unlike these giant Smash Bros things.

And the best part is the Amiibo will store it's own stats for transferring pokemon from game to game So that Pokemon will always be your pokemon to have and to hold.

I'll probably end up with a few staple Nintendo characters... They do look high quality and the poses are great.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Hopefully they do keep relatively true to their word and make them as cross-game as possible. It would be a disappointing move if they asked for you to buy specific variants of the same character for game specific features, but from what they've said I get the feeling that it might be a bit Skylanders-esque. We'll get all the Smash figures, and then as more Amiibo games come out new "seasons" of figures will launch. We might get different types of Mario (Mario Kart, Galaxy etc.) but to an Amibo game these could still all be recognised as "Mario". Essentially, as far as a game would be concerned, these would be like reprints. The physical model might look different, but the actual identification data would be the same.

So, for example, scanning a "Smash" Mario into Smash Bros. and any other Mario variant will have the same functionality. This allows them to update the Amiibo range as time goes on, while still keeping the core "cross-game" concept alive as much as possible.

EDIT - I see this has already been addressed! Ah well, just consider this to be further agreement.

----
When it comes to the first wave of figures, I could see myself buying quite a few of them if the price is right and the functionality is good. I play as quite a few characters in Smash, so I'd pick up a handful of those... and then probably just complete the set.

I'm somewhat hopeful that they turn out to be too expensive as that would make it easier to just buy one or two of my favourites and leave the rest.

£15-20 - I'd buy one
£10-13 - I'd buy a couple
<£10 - I'd be all over that gooseberry fool, would get 3/4 easy

Reckon they'll be closer to the £10 mark, really interested in more details on how games will use them. Would be really nice to buy one and through training and repeated playing with it you could power it up to give you a boost in some games.

http://www.nintendolinked.com/nintendo- ... -revealed/

Announced in the US for $12.99 each, which probably means the same in Euro. That makes £9.99 possible. If not officially, then shops will likely knock them down that extra few pence to do it.

If that happens, we're all doomed. I was betting on them being ridiculously expensive.
